Date: December 18, 2001 From: Why Have a Union at Tufts? (WHUT?) To: Tufts Graduate Students
Dear Fellow Graduate Student:
As you may know, there was a recent union drive on the Medford/Somerville Campus. A petition was filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) on Monday December 10, 2001 to have teaching assistants, graders, and research assistants exclusively represented as a collective bargaining unit by the United Auto Workers (UAW). Many graduate students have had questions about what a union is and its significance. We are a group of graduate students who have organized in response to these questions. Our organization is called "Why Have a Union at Tufts?" (WHUT?), and it is our intent to ensure that you are well informed about the implications a union would have on your graduate education.
We believe that a union is not necessary and would be detrimental to graduate students here at Tufts University. Since the formation of a union will significantly affect us all, WHUT? is committed to provide information so you can make a decision. It is our goal to provide an open forum to discuss any concerns, comments, or questions that you may have about how a union will affect you and your graduate education. We encourage you to read our views at our website (www.geocities.com/whut_01/) and email us your comments and concerns at
whut_01@yahoo.com. If you are interested in helping our cause, please feel free to contact us. We will be having a brief meeting on December 21st at 12:15 p.m. in room 122 at the campus center for anyone who is interested in joining us.
Warmest Regards,
The Students at WHUT?
